Siobhan Wall's new guide  Quiet London has just been published by Frances Lincoln @£9.99.

Quiet London is a guide to quiet places to meet, drink, eat, swim, rest, shop, sleep or read. It includes interesting, attractive places where people don't have to strain to hear each other speak. There are short descriptions for each venue, alongside travel and contact details and simple but atmospheric photographs in colour and black and white.

Like its much valued predecessor Quiet Amsterdam, the book is as beautiful as it is practical, a pleasure to read and hold in the hand.

Brilliant idea! I wish there was one for Oxfordshire, I live in a very nice village but even the pubs/restaurants & especially the shops here almost all play awful piped music all the time. I have yet to find a pub or restaurant I can go to regularly because of this.
Shops I regularly use are Waitrose, John Lewis, Boots in Thame & the small independent shops like Newitts butchers who offer a peaceful environment where browsing & shopping is a pleasant experience whithout the irritating piped music.
I am writing this from a David Lloyd health club which plays dreadful music all day throughout the place - even in the toilets you cannot escape it. I am here with 4 friends & we have just decided to go to one of our houses locally to have a coffee rather than the lounge here as the piped music is annoying all of us.

I snapped up a copy at the Stoke Newington Bookshop, London, where I live. While Stoke Newington is known for its cafés, none of them, as far as I can tell, is free of the curse of piped music. We do, however, have Hackney's best park which, I am happy to say, features in this charming book.
